Football games are supposed to last four quarters. The Mashpee High School football team is making a habit of shortening them considerably.
For the second week in a row the Falcons demoralized their opponents in the first quarter, and only had to play their starters for a short time. In two quarters of work the Mashpee starting lineup overpowered visiting South Hadley. The Falcons scored four touchdowns in the first quarter alone https://www.falconsatljersey.com/nick-wi...-c-14.html
, to build a 30 0 lead after one, and took a 43 0 lead into halftime.
Mashpee played second stringers and junior varsity players in the second half as they went on to post a 43 8 over the visitors. MHS is now 2 0 overall on the season.
The first half was a story of Mashpee dominating every facet of the game. The Falcons offense scored every time it had the ball in the first half Mohamed Sanu Jersey
, and the defense was dominant, with three first half takeaways and a total of negative 13 yards allowed over the first two quarters.
“We were pretty sharp,” head coach Matt Triveri said. “Our guys did a good job of executing.”
South Hadley started with the ball and the first three plays moved them backward about 10 yards before a short kick gave MHS the ball at the SH 37. Five plays later Matt Baggs ran in from five yards out for a 6 0 lead.
South Hadley s next drive lasted just two plays. Baggs stepped in front of a shuffle pass for an interception https://www.falconsatljersey.com/anthony...-c-15.html
, which set up a quick toss sweep to Devaun Ford for a six yard touchdown run. A conversion pass from Jake Johnston to Baggs made it 14 0.
Mashpee earned another takeaway the next time the visitors had the ball, with Ian Ahearn jumping on a fumble to give his team that ball at the 23. The next play saw Johnston go up top over the middle to Cam Kergo for a leaping grab in the end zone. Johnston then hit Michael Barrows for two points and a 22 0 lead.
After another SHHS punt, Johnston threw his second TD of the game on the final play of the first quarter. The TD came on a perfect screen pass that was set up brilliantly by the Mashpee offensive line https://www.falconsatljersey.com/justin-...-c-13.html
, which was awesome. Xavier Gonsalves scampered through the defense for a 50 yard score. Johnston hit Ford for the two pointer and a 30 0 lead at the end of the first.
The second quarter was just more of the same. Mashpee got two more TD runs. Ford ran one in from 10 yards out, and Kevin Childs added a late nine yarder before the half.
South Hadley scored late in the fourth quarter to spoil the shutout bid.
